Is the Water Wych safe to use?

Used for over 15 years, the Water Wych has proven safe in all ponds and water features with aquatic plant or animal life.

How soon will the Water Wych clear my water?

You can normally see the start of the clearing process within two weeks. Within 4 weeks your pond or water feature will be crystal clear as long as you have followed the instructions and your water is below pH8.

What size of Water Wych will be best for my water feature?

You cannot over treat a pond with a Water Wych, so if you are not sure of the correct size for your pond or feature, go for the larger one, it will last you longer and work faster. You can also use a combination of Water Wych's for your pond if the units we provide are not large enough for your needs. In larger ponds it is usually more effective to use two smaller units, (one at each end of the pond) this distributes the load and seems to clear the water more efficiently.

Will the Water Wych work without pump or filtration?

The Water Wych was designed to work in ponds without pumps or filtration, although if you do have a pump and filter you will find the results will be faster and more efficient.

Is the Water Wych cheaper to use than chemicals or mechanical devices?

Yes. Water Wych is less expensive than mechanical devices and safer to use than chemicals. Just submerse the Water Wych in the water and let the magic begin!

Is using the Water Wych harmful to fish fry?

No. The Water Wych has proven to be totally safe to use will all pond inhabitants and has actually been tested with fish fry and found to improve their chances of survival by improving the water quality and therefore improving the natural food available.

What is inside the Water Wych?

The Water Wych is a compound of specially blended volcanic rocks, carbons and silicates all encased in a recycled plastic housing.

Can I recycle the Water Wych?

Yes the Water Wych is 98% recyclable. When exhausted remove from the pond or feature, cut the strapping holding the containers, use the containers as planting pots for pond or garden plants. Empty the contents of the cotton netting onto the garden and dig in as fertilizer for your garden plants. It is one of the best fertilizers available as it has removed all the algae forming nutrients from the water, these nutrients also help your garden plants grow. Dispose of the strapping and cotton mesh.

What causes green water?

Green water is caused by Blue/Green algae. This forms when you have a combination of necessary ingredients. These ingredients are normally readily available in most garden ponds and water features, they are Carbon Dioxide, nitrogen, phosphates and sunshine. Blue/Green algae is available in many forms:- {Suspended - this causes the green water or pea soup water} {Filimentatious - this cases the string algae or blanket weed}. These are the two most common in garden ponds and water features. To remove the algae permanently you have to remove one or more of the ingredients. The Water Wych does this by absorbing the excess nutrients that are not used by the plant life, holding them and making them unavailable to the algae.

What is "pea soup" algae?

See question 9.

What is string algae?

String algae (or Blanket Weed) typically grows on the sides and bottom of the pond, or on any other surface that it can attach itself to. It grows in long filaments, thus the name string algae, under the water’s surface. Oxygen depletion can raise the pH of the water and thus increase the growth of string algae which thrives in water with high pH values.

Where do nutrients come from?

Many of the nutrients we find in our ponds come in the form of fish food and plant fertilizers. Other sources are rain, ground runoff and freshly drawn domestic water, each of which contain their fair share of nutrients that algae enjoy. Dead and decaying plants create another source of food for the algae. Leaves or lily pads that have died and are starting the decay process make a wonderful source for the algae to get nourishment!. Also the sediment in the bottom of your pond contains nutrients useful for algae to grow. Water Wych absorbs the excess nutrients and thus prevents the growth of algae.

Will pH levels affect my Water Wych?

Yes. To obtain the best results from your Water Wych the water in your pond or water feature should be always maintained at levels below pH8.0. Of the few customers who have reported poor results using the Water Wych, the vast majority were due entirely to consistently high alkalinity levels - pH 8.5 and above.  Reduction of the alkalinity to a level of pH8.0 or lower results in the Water Wych becoming totally effective within a few days.

Will the Water Wych remove staining?

Yes. It will remove peat staining and a variety of other natural stains found in water.

Will the Water Wych work with my existing bio-filter?

Yes. The Water Wych will compliment your bio-filter and complete the job! In the process of keeping the water safe and healthy for your fish a bio-filter's end product is nitrate, which actually feeds algae! The Water Wych absorbs the excess phosphates and nitrates in the water, thus inhibiting the growth of the algae.

Will the Water Wych work with my existing mechanical filter system?

Yes. However, the Water Wych is not intended to be an integrated part of a mechanical system. The Water Wych must be totally immersed in the main body of water in the pond and works best when placed close to the inlet or outlet flow of your filtration system.

Will the Water Wych work with my existing UV light?

Yes. Although UV light kills the algae in the water that passes through it, the nutrients produced by killing the algae can actually encourage the growth of more algae! The Water Wych absorbs those nutrients thus inhibiting further growth of algae and, it will control the blanket weed that the UV light can not reach!

Will the Water Wych work in my new concrete pond?

Yes the pond must either be painted with a recommended pond sealer or lined with a pond liner to stop the leaching of lime into the water.   An untreated pond or one that has been incorrectly painted will cause the lime from the concrete to leach into the pond water this will cause the alkalinity (hardness) of the water to increase dramatically and therefore the Water Wych would not be able to cope with the increase in algae growth.

Will the Water Wych remove chlorine from water?

Yes. The Water Wych will remove all manufactured chemicals normally found in garden ponds. See also "medications" below.

Will the Water Wych remove oil from the water?

No. If you have oil or other similar "solid" pollutant in the water, you should remove the Water Wych before it becomes clogged and no longer usable. Clean up the pollutant and then put back the Water Wych.

Can I use the Water Wych when using medications in the water?

No, it is not recommended. The Water Wych will remove or severely dilute the medication, quite rapidly. If you need to medicate your fish, they should ideally be removed from the pond and treated in a separate treatment tank, if this is not possible, remove the Water Wych for the duration of the treatment and then replace into the water.

Will the Water Wych work in flowing water?

No, and yes! The Water Wych was designed for use in enclosed static water bodies. If new water (e.g. a natural stream or "chlorinated" water source) is constantly passing through the pond, the Water Wych will very quickly become exhausted and unable to work efficiently. However, water that is moved through a pump or filtration system within the enclosed water body will actually enhance the efficiency of the Water Wych.

Which is best, sunlight or shade?

All ponds supporting aquatic life benefit from the sunlight. The answer is plenty of sun, and a Water Wych to control the algae!

Who manufactures the Water Wych?

The Water Wych is patented worldwide and currently manufactured only in the UK by the patent holders in England and the USA.
