The vinegar treatment is the most natural and environmentally friendly way of lowering the pH in water. A pond should have neutral water of between pH7 - 7.5. If the hardness of the water is above this it is unhealthy for fish and other pond inhabitants. The Water Wych need the hardness of the water to be below pH8 for it to work at its best.
If you do not notice a vast difference after two weeks of the Water Wych being in the water then follow these instructions for two weeks and then the Water Wych will take over.
Also if you find that once the algae has gone you get a re-growth after a couple of months, it is probably due to weather conditions that have raised the pH of the water. Follow these instructions again for two weeks to again lower the hardness of the water.

A bottle of Vinegar (either white or apple cider is great for troughs)
